Lesson 1 of 2 · Knowing Trà Dưỡng
What Trà Dưỡng is
The most distinctive line, and how to talk about it within the rules
Trà Dưỡng (the herbal tea line) is herbal tea brewed by hand, in ten flavours, sharing one familiar group of ingredients such as red dates, goji berries, chrysanthemum and rosebuds. It is the line guests most often remember when The Hoa comes up, so it is worth knowing by heart.
How to advise: do not guess at illness, ask about taste
The Hoa website says it plainly: there is no need to guess what the body needs nourishing today. Start from the group of ingredients and the flavour the guest feels like drinking. That is how you should advise as well.
- Ask whether the guest prefers sweet or light, floral or nutty.
- Listen to the guest's situation (just had a big meal, often up late, trouble sleeping), then suggest a flavour that fits.
- Do not ask what illness the guest has, and do not infer an illness from what the guest says.
Three things that are easy to confuse
- Dưỡng Thần (Calm Spirit) and Dưỡng Tâm (Sweet Sleep) are very alike. The difference: Dưỡng Tâm contains cordyceps and is for the evening, while Dưỡng Thần is for the daytime, when things feel tense.
- Cordyceps is found in only two flavours: Dưỡng Tâm and Dưỡng Thận (Root Vitality). This is the answer when a guest asks which flavour is the most premium.
- Dưỡng An Bụng (Tummy Comfort) uses roselle, the red artichoke, so the cup is pinkish red with a light, tart taste. Do not talk about it cooling the liver the way people do with green artichoke.
The words you must stay within
Use only words like: supports, gives a feeling of, helps you feel more at ease. Never say cure, treat, heal, and never promise any result at all.
Take this with you. Trà Dưỡng (the herbal tea line) is herbal tea, not medicine. Drink 1 cup a day, no more than 3 cups. If a guest is pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical treatment, remind them to ask their doctor first.
